Austria was candidate to nab Roman Polanski

US authorities tried to get Austria to detain Roman Polanski before he travelled to Switzerland and was arrested by authorities there.
Documents obtained by the Associated Press show LA county authorities determined that Polanski checked out of an Austrian hotel on September 23.
The e-mails, obtained under a US public records request, show the Americans pre-empted the Swiss in tracking Polanski down, contrary to an earlier report that claimed the Swiss were on the case first.
The US laywers, however, decided to pull back when they were not sure how co-operative the Austrians would be in an extradition. They also ran out of time.
Deputy district attorney Diana Carbajal writes in an e-mail: “I don’t have experience with any Austrian extraditions so I don’t know how ‘friendly’ they would be to extradition on such a case.”
The US is expected to seek his extradition for a 1977 charge of unlawful sex with a minor.
