Chat show host Jerry Springer has told how his father was haunted for 40 years about the Holocaust.
The 65-year-old US star revealed how his toymaker father Richard never felt safe years after fleeing Germany with wife Margo. The couple were among the last Jews to leave Germany after they were granted visas by the UK.
He said: “My dad was very short and when he was driving, he had to look through the steering wheel. He told me that when he got to 80, he would give up driving but ‘you never know when you have to get away’.
“I was stunned because he never talked about the Holocaust and I thought that for the 40 years he was in America, he was thinking that he might need to get away. I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t believe it.”
He added: “Mum and dad were trying desperately for two to three years to get out of Germany when the British government gave them visas at the last minute.”
