Polanski to be released on bail to Swiss chalet

Fugitive film director Roman Polanski will be released on a $4.5 million cash bail to house arrest at his Swiss chalet with electronic monitoring.

The Swiss Justice Ministry announced it would not challenge the ruling of a Zurich court that granted Polanski’s second application for bail.

Polanski will have to surrender his passports and other ID and have electronic surveillance installed at his house, a sun-drenched wooden chalet perched on a grassy mountainside in Gstaad. Its name: “Milky Way.”

Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice said in a statement: “He will be under house arrest and has also committed to wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet.”

Polanski is wanted in Los Angeles on 30-year-old charges of unlawful sex with a minor.
